چکیده

We consider staged self-assembly systems, in which squareshaped Wang tiles can be added to bins in several stages. Within these bins, the tiles may connect to each other, depending on the glue types of their edges. Previous work by Demaine et al. showed that a relatively small number of tile types suffices to produce arbitrary shapes in this model. However, these constructions were only based on a spanning tree of the geometric shape, so they did not produce full connectivity of the underlying grid graph in the case of shapes with holes; designing fully connected assemblies with a polylogarithmic number of stages was left as a major open problem. We resolve this challenge by presenting new systems for staged assembly that produce fully connected polyominoes in O(log n) stages, for various scale factors and temperature τ = 2 as well as τ = 1. Our constructions work even for shapes with holes and uses only a constant number of glues and tiles. Moreover, the underlying approach is more geometric in nature, implying that it promised to be more feasible for shapes with compact geometric description.

New Geometric Algorithms for Staged Self-Assembly

We consider staged self-assembly, in which squareshaped Wang tiles can be added to bins in several stages. Within these bins the tiles may connect to each other, depending on the glue types of their edges. In general, self-assembly constructs complex (polyomino-shaped) structures from a limited set of square tiles. Previous work by Demaine et al. considered a setting in which assembly proceeds ...

Genetic and Memetic Algorithms for Sequencing a New JIT Mixed-Model Assembly Line

This paper presents a new mathematical programming model for the bi-criteria mixed-model assembly line balancing problem in a just-in-time (JIT) production system. There is a set of criteria to judge sequences of the product mix in terms of the effective utilization of the system. The primary goal of this model is to minimize the setup cost and the stoppage assembly line cost, simultaneously. B...

Diamondoids and DNA Nanotechnologies

Diamondoids are cage-like saturated hydrocarbons consisting of fused cyclohexane rings. The Diamondoids family of compounds is one of the best candidates for molecular building blocks (MBBs) in nanotechnology to construct organic nanostructures compared to other MBBs known so far. The challenge is to find a route for self-assembly of these cage hydrocarbons and their applications in the bottom-...

Optimal Results in Staged Self-Assembly of Wang Tiles

The subject of self-assembly deals with the spontaneous creation of ordered systems from simple units and is most often applied in the field of nanotechnology. The self-assembly model of Winfree describes the assembly of Wang tiles, simulating assembly in real-world systems. We use an extension of this model, known as the staged self-assembly model introduced by Demaine et al. that allows for d...

A Bi-Objective Approach to an Assembly Line Re-Balancing Problem: Model and Differential Evolution Algorithms

Assembly lines are special kinds of production systems which are of great importance in the industrial production of high quantity commodities. In many practical manufacturing systems, configuration of assembly lines is fixed and designing a new line may be incurred huge amount of costs and thereby it is not desirable for practitioners. When some changes related to market demand occur, it is wo...
